At a time when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender LGBT individuals are an increasingly open, acknowledged, and visible part of society, clinicians and researchers are faced with incomplete information about the health status of this community. Although a modest body of knowledge on LGBT health has been developed over the last two decades, much remains to be explored.
A lesbian is a homosexual woman. The concept of "lesbian" to differentiate women with a shared sexual orientation evolved in the 20th century. Throughout history, women have not had the same freedom or independence as men to pursue homosexual relationships, but neither have they met the same harsh punishment as homosexual men in some societies.
Since the Black Lives Matter movement gained national attention inorganizers have pushed to prioritize voices of black queer and transgender women. Two of the three founders identify as queerand along with drawing attention to numerous brutal murders of transgender women of colorthey have also driven conversations on how anti-black portrayals in media and popular culture can have serious consequences on black queer and trans women's lives. One such portrayal is the experience of a group of black lesbians who were arrested and charged with felony gang assault and attempted murder in
Robyn Exton wanted to help a gay girlfriend who had gone through a break-up get back on the market. But Exton found that dating apps for lesbians were few and akin to Grindr, a service for gay men that is infamous for flings. So Exton, a former marketer, created Her, a free app for women looking to date other women. The idea is to create a community for lesbians looking to make friends, chat, and, of course, date.

Over a period of a few months, the BBC spoke to dozens of young lesbians in a country where homosexuality is illegal. They told us about their day-to-day lives and how they use secret memes to connect with each other on social media platforms and chat apps. We have substituted those images with that of a violet for the purpose of this report.

French MPs will today Tuesday begin examining a controversial bioethics bill which includes provisions for extending medically assisted procreation — which includes in vitro fertilisation IVF — to lesbian couples and single women. The health, justice and research ministers will address the French parliament at pm CEST to defend the bill, considered as a landmark societal reform of Emmanuel Macron's presidency. Under current legislation, only heterosexual women with fertility problems have access to medically assisted fertility techniques in France, including sperm donation and in vitro fertilisation IVF.
