When the day turns into night And the world is sound asleep Thats when you take me higher And the secrets that we keep You try to bring me sunshine But you leave me feeling cold I cant wait forever or put my life on hold I cant wait untill you stop your everlasting games You dont no cuz you'v never seen me dancing in the rain If you really wait too long But you wont no until you've seen me dancing in the rain Dance in the rain, we'll be dancing in the rain.
One aspect of this universe that has yet to be mined is happy hardcore, a kind of loathed slapstick dance music that fuses aggressive tempos with over-the-top euphoria. One person who has been tangentially exploring this trend is San Francisco-based DJ and producer Chrissy previously Chrissy Murderbot whose recent LP Resilienceout in November on Chiwaxevokes the positivity, friendship and perseverance central to rave culture. My new album, Resilienceis heavily inspired by those old records, so it feels like a good time to speak up about a very influential but deeply maligned sub-genre from the rave era: happy hardcore.

People like to point toward trance or melodic bass when they talk about songs that would make you cry and feel emotional, but happy hardcore is just as likely to do so, if not more. The combination of brilliant melodies with a powerfully fast tempo and those supersaws just brings out something really deep inside. It touches on a lot of the changes in my personal life as well as my ever changing relationship with music.
You all know happy hardcore right? A genre filled with chipmunk vocals, nursery rhyme synth riffs and adoring fans who all once owned a Vauxhall Nova SRi. Happy hardcore stemmed from what was known as hardcore and to a certain extent many of the releases between to still contained elements of both hardcore and jungle.
Invariably you'll be able to listen to a unofficial bootleg of the song in question, where the bedroom remixer's decided that the best way to improve "Happy Birthday" or "Greensleeves" or Mozart's "Turkish March" is to inject it with a massively OTT rhythmic track that has absolutely no relation to the song in question whatsoever. And that's part of the joy and pleasure of this music—it gives taste a massive middle finger. It is craven and bloated, rough and ready, queasy and uneasy.
