Normally they are invisible. They make a small amount of fluid that lubricates the vaginal lips. If a flap of skin grows over the opening of one of the glands, the fluid backs up.
The Bartholin glands are located in both sides of the inner labia and serve primarily to produce the mucous that moisturizes the vaginal mucosa. The mucous is secreted into two ducts that appear in the posterior vaginal introitus. A Bartholin gland cyst is usually caused by blockage of the duct as a result of inflammation or trauma; a Bartholin gland abscess occurs when the obstructed duct becomes infected.
Vaginal cysts are closed pockets of air, fluid, or pus located on or under the vaginal lining. There are several types of vaginal cysts. These can be caused by injury during childbirth, fluid buildup in your glands, or benign noncancerous tumors within the vagina.
Cyst of posterior vaginal wall is very rare. This case relates to a patient who presented with polypoidal mass protruding out from vagina which could have been easily mistaken as uterovaginal prolapse, but appropriate clinical evaluation supported with investigations clinched the diagnosis easily. Usually, Gartner's duct cysts are on the anterolateral vaginal wall and its chances of being present on the posterior vaginal wall are relatively rare.
Bartholin gland cysts are mucus-filled sacs that can form when the glands located near the opening to the vagina are blocked. Cysts are usually painless, but if large, they can interfere with sitting, walking, and sexual intercourse. Doctors may create a permanent opening from the cyst to the outside or may surgically remove the cyst.

But if the cyst grows very large, it can become noticeable and uncomfortable. The cyst can sometimes affect the outer pair of lips surrounding the vagina labia majora.
